Ok, I looked up the author so I could form a context. [this is standard process for me]
Leah McLaren is a long time, professional columnist for quite a number of publications, mostly in Canada and the UK.
A columnist’s job is to be readable entertainment, just shocking enough to hold attention but not so much as to incite riots.
Her style is: HERE IS MY SHOCKING CONFESSION.
A look through her past and current work and it’s clear.
The thing about columnists: They aren’t fact checked. None of them are. It’s entertainment to get you mad or make you nod in agreement but mostly just written to be read.
Columnists make things up. Use humor and exaggeration. Outright lie for some effect. And in that world, it’s all ok for whatever reason.
So, I have context now and I’ve shared it.
Best summary for context is this, found here:
” Many, perhaps most, are hired to be provocative, to say surprising things, to start a debate or even an argument.”
I don’t have much use for columnists.
I only ever followed one columnist, a long long long time ago and that was Dave Barry. But I knew he was a liar. That goes with humor.
This writer doing the SHOCKING CONFESSION style, is also a form of humor but it’s the columnist that’s laughing.
Their words start controversy and debate. That’s their job. They laugh as they get their paychecks.
So, I don’t have much use for columnists.
A shocking confessional is also a form of humor. It’s probably not your style of humor nor mine, but it is.
My son eats crayons and basically sucks.
Is any of that article true? Doesn’t matter. It’s Dave Barry-ish. Even her “Very Serious Columns” could equally be “Why peas should be banned” or “Why men can’t be trusted” or “Why being a do-nothing parent is ok”. It’s basically fluff.
