Oh it surprised me personally because I remember the controversy of this project that almost didn’t get built commemorating US soldiers who died in Vietnam in the 1980s.
That’s me in 1986, visiting the Vietnam memorial in Washington DC. It was really new then – and it was the first time I started understanding what the black flags that said “POW/MIA” meant and I was standing by a cousin that died there that I didn’t know, but has a family last name.
I was never much for war, then and now. Any death is too much so I don’t think in terms of “well, not that many deaths relatively speaking” when they’re preventable.
