Oh gosh, I haven’t a clue. I started watching with my grandmother at 6.5 when it first came to the USA apparently so it’s kind of a brand loyalty obligation duty thing.
I’d say it’s kind of like liking Godzilla movies. The cheesiness is part of the charm. 1/2 of the fandom is nice people ,1/2 is grumpy old men.
My nostalgia is tethered to my experiences.
I like time travel movies/shows. Always hated the tethers of time. The main plot device, the TARDIS is what I like about it most as well as the idea of a traveler that changes personality and appearance but is the same in the core.
It’s a story about a space clown in a magic box that is terrible to his friends.
So that said, I don’t think it much matters where you start, what you like or don’t. The SpecialFX were best during the “Steven Moffett” era but his stories were bombastic and lacked some of the goofiness. “My era” was “classic Dr Who”, 5th Doctor, the blond haired guy but again, that’s childhood talking.
If you’re willing to do the whole 50 years eventually ,maybe start with the “Five Doctors”, 1983. I saw it live, simulcast to 1/3 of the planet which was a big deal at the time. It has 5 of the Doctors at once and their basic personalities, as well as a bunch of the characters you’ll eventually meet.
Maybe jump ahead to the other multi-doctor specials so you can get them as well. There’s a couple in the new era, and the “3 doctors” in the classic era.
There if you like one of the personalities of one of the doctors, you can start with them .
But again, it’s space clown, magic box. it’ll either grab you or it won’t.
