Not surprised. Once one steps outside of Eastern Orthodoxy or Roman Catholocism, iconoclasm (breaking of icons) abounds. So, the statues of the Catholics are seen as old relics and the icons of the Orthodox are seen as bad medieval art. Both of them are big on relics; hanging on to dead bodies because they might drip oil or ooze sweet smelling resin, which amplifies the fact that Christianity is rather a death cult ultimately. But this is icky to Protestants and those who followed who consider themselves “post protestants” – just me and jesus, bible only, etc who prefer to focus on the risen Christ, the empty cross, instead of the guy hanging there for a few hours one Friday afternoon. So no, not surprised. I was raised with a bit of that, although not with the negativity towards the Orthodox or Catholics – most seeing them as old-fashioned death worshippers. But my time in the Eastern Orthodox church I ‘got’ the theology side of things and it put a nice perspective on all of Judaism and Christianity for me.
