The for-profit ANS CO+RE, the beginnings of the commercialization of the internet, began in May 1991
The backbone of NSFNet (successor of ARPAnet) was sold to commercial vendors (UUNET, Sprint, AT&T and Level3) starting in 1993 and the last was sold off in 1998.
You’d think SOMEBODY would be unhappy with preferential treatment being given to only a few large companies.
Indeed there was and still is. Cook. Still working hard at it.
