Never used it. Worked with cerebral Palsy and downs kids long ago and even in school, I didn’t use it. It’s one of those words that makes the user of it look pitiful.
I’ve had it used on me in a friendly jovial way and it doesn’t bother me. I just never said it back.
If you said multiculturalism is the new racism (although multiculturalism isn’t new) you *might* have a leg to debate on, maybe. But what you have for your hill doesn’t make much sense.
Socially retarded might accurately describe OP’s stance while also embracing it only slightly as an accurate descriptor at times.
But I’d still prefer “socially awkward”.
