He took all the ideas I grew up with along with him (he’s a dozen years older or so but I know he was inspired by the same Joseph Campbell stuff as I was as it was ‘hot stuff’ in the 1980s) and put them together all wrong.
So for me, he’s competition. He got his popular book and following but wasn’t careful about who adored him which put a permanent taint. He’s extremely sloppy with the things he criticizes — accuracy levels are about at a right-wing talk radio or Joe Rogan level on a lot of concepts –
..but ultimately, competition. I mean, how could he possibly have mixed together archetypes, the problem with boys feeling no purpose in the West, epigenetics, basic humanist values and end up with misogynist pride is good is irritating.
I don’t know. My view on him was set when I first heard of some professor misunderstanding a bill in the Canadian legislature and being a big mouth about it.
A year later, he shows up here and there as people talk about him more and more. Then he has some book that takes off and apparently was a popular youtuber for some time during all that with lectures and stuff.
But he’s still that professor that did a “damn kids not on my Canadian university lawn” without comprehending it, became a leader too quickly and didn’t handle the power well.
I’ve called him “over his head” for years now. It shows. He was talking out of his element much of the time
I didn’t know HOW bad he was over his head ’til he showed up as severely ill due to addiction but it was clear.
I don’t mind that he has a pet theory even or has a 12 step program book that got popular. It’s mostly the lack of responsibility in his role.
