ne would think that the world started in Ancient Greece with Plato and Aristotle,

hits the nail on the head.
I learned about Africa only in the 12th grade, memorized the countries as they were at the time and some stories. Prior to that, Egypt and South Africa were the only things we ever talked about in History/Geography/Social Studies classes.

And… it’s not a priority in US education (or wasn’t – maybe it is now – I HOPE so…) because it’s not conquerable. It’s not ours. We don’t own it. We don’t have relations with Africa that are that great.

The way school was taught (and again, I HOPE it’s changed), one would think that the world started in Ancient Greece with Plato and Aristotle, but American Education has always had a slightly racist and xenophobic tinge to it. I hope that’s changing.
