My mother wanted to homeschool me in the early 1980s.
Unfortunately, the public school system pushed back really hard and said that homeschooling was only for religious people.
“religious nutjobs” I think they said or something like that.
They wouldn’t let her do it.
But I didn’t know this
At 13-14 ish I discovered John Holt and Summerhill in my public library.
I fell in love with Summerhill and couldn’t find it around me. This was before the internet was available (about 1985).
But I talked to my mom about it and we found a scholarship in a newspaper to a tiny school that I had a slight chance of winning as it was income and essay based and I liked writing.
I submitted two essays, was interviewed twice and won, getting out of public and into a k-12 private for my 9-12 years. Graduated with 12 kids.
Wasn’t Summerhill but as close as i could find.
It was years later she told me she’d wanted to homeschool me in elementary. Had no idea. But it explained why she was so supportive.
