Did you know they set the BOY SCOUTS in the USA back 30+ years in progress?
There was a hard-right wing takeover of the Boy Scouts in the late 1970s while just getting into Cub Scouts. Of course I didn’t know about it then.
They didn’t like that the REST OF SCOUTING went CO-ED.
“Ew, no GIRLS in OUR BOY scouts” they complained in the late 1970s.
And so they took over the leadership, moved the headquarters from New Jersey to Texas.
They got the really old Boy Scout manual illustrator back, who was in his 80s by then and they stripped away the Boy Scout manual in this weird combination of old and new that was my handbook. I loved that handbook and read it cover-to-cover but there was always “something” odd I couldn’t put my finger on.
I earned a lot of wonderful skill medals that I’m very proud of but they took them away JUST after I left because it was “participation trophies”. This was the late 1980s. Rhetoric sound familiar?
The WHOLE DEBACLE over gays in scouting, girls in scouting in the past 30 years would have been 100% avoided back in the early 1980s if they didn’t decide to make Scouting a throwback to an imaginary era that neverwas.
