Most people stay more or less with the music they listened to when they were between 13-16 years of age and use it as a benchmark for future music.
Of course that is not universally true but it’s something I’ve noticed.
I had a resurgence of interest in new music around the age of 40, and suddenly got interested in new styles of music that came out.
But for me, it’s never been about the lyrics. I listen for the music styles, the patterns they come up with and watch them shift and change over time.
The last novel thing I’ve noticed is “mumble rap” which is an odd category title as it seems to encompass a variety of styles within. The older rap artists don’t like it but that’s old/new generation for you.
Look at everynoise if you haven’t been there yet and poke around. You may find something.
