metaphysically? I don’t know. I know physically from computing. That’s my base for this kind of stuff as I learned it long before anything else. So a pointer is an area of memory (literally – it is a tiny rectangular section of a computer memory chip) with a location code (set in place using high/low pulses) that indicates to the CPU “You can find the object (data, whatever you want to call it)” in this physical location. So one actual location has actual tiny contents which tell the main processor where the actual contents it is looking for are. This is handy because: pointers take up VERY little room: “The thing you want is in A3″ But if you go to A3, you might find the every religious text in every language translated to every language in written, audio, video and holographic form taking up several very large hard drives. It’s much easier to say “a3″ and sometimes A3 points to nothing because SOMEBODY MOVED what was at A3 or it was never there to begin with.

So to me it’s probably always physical. If it’s not in a computer and it’s instead the realm of concepts/ideas/etc, then similar processes take place in the human brain or in books or in the negotiations that take place in communication which is verbal or written or in thought etc. Maybe.
