Man, I just learned today that if she had the means, my mother was going to put me in a “it starts with an M… M.. Mon.. something”. “Montessori? “That’s it” school when I was little. She didn’t believe in Ritalin, which was an option EVEN IN THE EARLY 1980S, which I didn’t know, and I was ALMOST on it. Instead, I got a revolutionary-for-the-time guided meditation/biofeedback program based on a study that had finished just the year prior. And yes, it worked. But wow… I almost went to a Montessori school. That would’ve been awesome. A good “I read Mother Earth News before it was glossy” Mom. What surprised you that your parents did – or tried to do – for you that you only learned about as an adult?

 Really was. I was diagnosed with “Generalized Anxiety Disorder”, whatever that is. Probably would be ADHD now or high functioning autistic or some other category-of-the-day. Or maybe it’s right.Anyway, it really helped. At 11, I learned to breath through my feet, be a bottle in the sand warmed up by the sun, and could control a computer with my emotions, winning video games with relaxation and good thoughts.It was cool. Lots of stinky pads on me but it was cool.
=====
 Oh shit, THAT’S why QR “disappeared”. The techniques were included in other techniques in use to this day…
…but talk of “QR” vanished after the early 90s and I couldn’t find out why.
This explains it. Guy that invented it had a great technique but was also a sleeze. Power corrupts sometimes.

holy crap there it is.
His theory is that the patient (me in that case, although I didn’t have him doing it as I was in NJ) could control the colored patterned representing the EEG read out by controlling emotional states.

It was a video game. I had to change the different colors with my mind and feelings.

Wow… mind blown. I had it done in 1983. (born in 72). Ok, mind blown. I really was lucky. Good mom.

woah… this was ALMOST me and I *think* this is the doctor. Union NJ. 1983

I recognize that name. Tansey. “MA Tansey”. So glad this wasn’t me though: this poor kid had been on Ritalin already but this biofeedback treatment fixed it.

Research into improbable things.
I’m grateful to Mom for getting me biofeedback / guided meditation training as a kid. I wanted to see how much I could find online.

I think I found it. The doctor. The device. I’m laughing quietly the laugh of a possibly successful search of an improbable find: a psychiatrist that did biofeedback for me somewhere in New Jersey around 1983.

https://patents.google.com/patent/US5406957A/en
lol good for him.

ELECTROENCEPHALC NEUROFEEDBACK APPARATUS FOR TRANING AND TRACKENG OF COGNITIVE STATES
Michael A. Tansey,

lol “Heavy Hands”
“Warm Hands”.

I’m reading this patent and it’s throwing me back to a chair with electrodes, headphones and a computer.

Make the music softer with “warm hands” (28 Hz)
Make the music louder with “heavy hands” (14 Hz).

lol I’m grinning ear to ear. Found it.

and it expired: TODAY.
Gotta love timing of things

Oh I’m dying here: THIS was part of my training exercises.
Can’t believe I’m seeing this.

I was MAPPED! but I got to control the cartography a bit.

 Attitudes shifted.
Biofeedback was a product of the 60s/70s/80s.
But Ritalin was stronger than all that. Get-it-done-now. No time for therapy. Send-The-Kid-To-Boot-Camp 90s.Society shifted.
=====
  And the founder of ONE aspect of my training, QR (which works btw – it only takes a few seconds to shift how you respond consciously) was ALSO diddling a female patient and his 2nd wife testified against him.So, it sorta fell apart as a “respectable field”. But it’s still in use quietly, among “don’t do the meds” teachers and parents.
=====
What blows me away is I’ve continuously used these techniques, controlling how I respond to things consciously. This is why I balk at “no free will” arguments. Will is all I have. Lose that and I’m back to just… reacting blindly.

 Not only I can’t believe I found the guy, I KNOW, I’m 1 of 500.
Hypotheses as to a Cartography of ConsciousnessThrough work with over 500 subjects, M. Tansey has identified specific 1 Hz frequency bands to be indicative of certain attentional, cognitive, imaginal and/or somatosensory…
“I read his published case studies that I could find and THANKFULLY, none were me although one boy seemed a LOT like me as I was reading. His reading scores were lower but his IQ was on target.

======
 [In some of his papers, biofeedback was shown to increase IQ scores up to 20 points using the wisc scale. I took a bunch of IQ type tests as a kid but I don’t *think* I was part of those studies… but who knows…. maybe]- oh thank you for letting me know. I wasn’t sure.Genetically, I score super-high on ADHD, but I guess since GAD isn’t a ‘hot topic’ thing, I didn’t see a metric for that.

 ———————
 I was inspired tonight. I’d seen the last half of an amazing documentary on a twins experiment a few months ago, “Three Identical Strangers”, and tonight saw the first half.It reminded me of my biofeedback training in 1983.

I didn’t expect to be able to find out the doctor. I thought it was just a psychiatrist toying around with new ideas. But he was publishing and now in 2019, I can actually find it — and thank to my favorite Russian hacker woman from sci-hub, I can download the papers myself.

 [and no, that boy wasn’t me. None were but there was ONE case in ONE report that sounded a LOT like me.

But the reading scores were way off. IQ was spot on, but the reading was off]
