Dominick’s nailed it. It’s hard to step outside of one’s own perspective. I’ve always been in America (visited Ireland once) and my whole life it’s impossible to escape AMERICAN IS AWESOMER THAN [anybody] propaganda / public relations / patriotism / nationalism / whatever.
Indoctrinated from youth like we all in the US were.
Some do a flip and then hate the US, but it’s just two sides of the same coin.
As I’ve seen American patriotism upheld from youth by some really shitty people, I hesitate to proclaim my own civic nationalism. A certain kind of patriotism is embarrassing to me as a citizen. Jesus-on-a-paper-plate stuff.
The values I like are generic. I like what’s good, am annoyed or embarrassed by what’s bad. Never gave serious thought about living elsewhere, but like most humans, could *probably* manage wherever given basic human rights are standard there.
