Long time Doctor Who watcher. [grandmother introduced me when I was 8, now I’m 45]. I always think I’ve seen all the episodes that can be seen but sometimes there’s one I haven’t and last night, I had not only the treat of an episode I missed, but one with a beautiful, haunting storyline, song, marvelous speeches and character development. I’d heard an instrumental of this song in a later episode and it was haunting but I didn’t know this was the origin episode and had lyrics. How to summarize? Let’s see: they visit a temple planet within a solar system whose seven planets share the same religion that the various species all believe in; a religion that has lasted without end for millions and millions of years. The song, called “The Long Song”, is a ‘ “lullaby without end” sung to feed the Old God and keep him asleep. By the time of its ending, it had been going on for millions of years, Chorister handing it to Chorister, from generation after generation. It was sung by the Queen of Years along with the Chorister at the Festival of Offerings, where all the species from the local system would gather, and offer valuable things to the Old God ‘ The little girl who starts the song has been trained since birth to memorize every story ever told about the Warrior King for millions of years but she was reluctant to perform her role. In the story, when this portion of the song comes up (it’s longer than this) and you suddenly hear all of the gathered worshipers singing along at just the right moment, it’s unexpected and breath-taking. Nice treat for a “night without sleep” to see this episode waiting for me on my DVR and a nice song to play in my head as I fell asleep — and to wake up to when I woke up later on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPisDzhYrCg
