Indeed, whereas two analogous objects are structurally the same, a metaphor is like a projection onto a lower dimensional space, because there is a loss of certain qualities when the mapping takes place. A metaphor relates a literal thing to an abstraction. For example, the dot product between 2 vectors gives a scalar. It is a mapping from R^2 to the real line, whereas a matrix preserves dimension.
Sorry. Neither the short quote nor the whole quote register with me. There’s always stronger and weaker in different ways around you. Mercy is necessary because all of us have some point in our lives that we need the mercy of another to continue. It may be delusional to believe that one will be taken care of for life; but it is more delusional to believe that one CAN “be an island” that stands alone. Nobody stands alone. They may be lonely but human interaction requires some level of cooperation. So, no; the quotes don’t register with me as rational but perhaps defeatist.
I hate taking the political compass test — it’s long and there’s no room for “neutral” on it and the questions are annoying. So I only take it every two years. But this way I get a nice scientific cmparison to see if my values change. And, nah, they really don’t change much. I got a little more radical but only a tiny bit.
meh. I’m not much for hero worship. I went to school with kids like him, Main difference is he went to school in a Rolls-Royce and had all kinds of luxuries growing up as a kid, although I get a kick out of his backstory; the three weeks after moving to Canada before his mom’s contacts got her some good work there again and they had Wheaties one morning. Is what it is. People worship rich people. I don’t get it ,but if it suits you, go for it.
This has been pretty standard in corporations for several years now. It’s part of human resources stuff. It’s another box to fill in, you fill it in how you like, Mr. Mrs. Ms but pronouns and preferred name if wanted.
