Last night, I thought, “Wouldn’t it be great if school was only six seconds long?”. The part of the brain that all information goes through – that gives us the experience of “NOW” – is the phonological loop – it is about 4-8 seconds long – it has other names – Working Memory, Short-Term Memory – but the loop captures it best. It’s the place where songs get stuck in your head and where you have that GREAT IDEA that is suddenly GONE.
I spent the past 12 months studying this tiny part of the mind and everything I could related to it. I don’t understand it all, but i understand enough of it to know its importance in life – from even before we are born.
And I think everything is learned in about six seconds, chained together like traincars but with a little more overlap. And everything is experienced in about six seconds – about a second overlapping on either side of six seconds, with about four good focused seconds to absorb something new.
I’ll teach things that are true to the best of my knowledge and start with the things I find personally interesting and useful to all. I’ll get more specific as time goes on. I have a lot of territory to cover. But getting in the right mindset to approach life and its difficulties should be #1. I’ll probably spend a while on that.
