Epistemological Anarchist: “There’s no one perfect way to get knowledge” Instrumentalism: What’s useful is useful. Theory Theory: It’s theories all the way down. All humans make and use theories to understand things. “Normal Science”: It’s important that normal scientists keep doing normal sciencing. Paradigm Shift: Wowzers are great Too many wowzers turn me skeptical of wowzers. But I can tolerate the hype SO LONG AS normal science also keeps doing normal science.
I sometimes watch mysteries with my mom and in one of them, the backstory was a set of awful gaybashing / curbstomping that took place in Australia in the early 1990s. (and they all escaped prosecution and most were in positions of power under a code of secrecy). It was a solid backdrop for a story. But those flashback scenes made me flinch as I’d forgotten just how rough and “buried under the rug” things were 25-30 years ago. I’d say the tides started turning around 1995 but prior to that it was a different world.
Charges dropped though. Case sealed. Guy’s character stays wrecked though. So, the flip-it-around maneuver worked. It usually does. It’s standard fare in rape cases.
Ok So I’m basically an Epistemological Anarchist but not entirely. I lean strongly towards Instrumentalism. BUT I think that Eliminative Materialism goes too far. Theory Theory rather is what I place there as a normal and natural part of how humans function. I also think the ways-of-science are currently the most fruitful approach. Kuhn’s concept of “Normal Science” is good: that scientists do as they do, following broad consensus within their fields and that every once in a while there is a loss of consensus among normal science from which there is a paradigm shift. But now that Paradigm Shift has become a “thing-in-itself being sought after, norms of Paradigm Shift are established. But so long as there is method and care, progress will continue, even as the daily “Paradigm Shift” announcements grow us weary of such things as most turn out to be donkey dust.
It’s sort of holographic but a bit less woo. It’s like how we can deduce and infer and find implications to come up with a big picture, just without us being needed.
