I’ve been learning to acknowledge being white and it’s been weird for me. My whole life it’s been assumed that if we don’t mention race, equality will magically happen. This might be true *if* the media cooperated with this, as they do in many other countries.
But as long as we get bombarded with “white” this and “black” that it stays in the American public consciousness.
So, the US needs to have a proper race discussion. 30+ years of trying to say nothing on one hand while ALWAYS saying it on the other hand and using “code words” (ghetto and inner city always meant “poor black neighborhood” and nothing else for example). I try to do my part now by mentioning white for myself when it can contribute to the conversation.
But I look forward to a day when media and public consciousness can put that aside in the USA. But we’re a long long way away from that unfortunately.
