It’s tricky. But it depends on what your needs are. I’m a “go where the people are” / “Do what the romans do” within reason (or what i consider reason)
I’ve never been happy in any environment I found myself in so a form of learned helplessness likely: my expectations for society is limited and I find my freedoms where I can.
Yet some environments are better than others. I like the public square because of access to a variety of people and I’d run things differently of course.
I lost my main twitter account over copyright strikes from 7 years ago when I was sharing copies of vines I made. I didn’t pay attention as they came in. Didn’t know after 6, that’s it.
I had an older account I returned to.
Discord almost got bought by Microsoft – Skype 2 was nearly a reality and with that all the things that come with it. Eventually, Discord will go that way as all of them do. They want to make a profit and with profit comes the corporate sponsors shaping policy.
So, I dunno.
If you want to find the kind of freedom you want online, you have to go IPv6 and some kind of federated setup. Not hard to do anymore: off the shelf stuff available. Is it necessary? Well, that’s all what your needs are. I don’t have that need so I don’t but many do.
