It’s similar to knowing what somebody is typing while on the phone with them. This was more true in the days of mechanical keyboards such as dumb terminals, but those keyboards were so plasticky, springy and noisy, it probably wasn’t difficult to learn what somebody was typing based upon the frequencies, even the limited ones over a phone. At least I always though that’s how it would work. Never tried it.
