It’s one of many things we routinely get backwards. We’re intelligent because animals are intelligent. One of my favorite backwards analogies is “the brain is like a computer”. We use that so often we don’t even notice that the reality is: “The computer is like a brain”. It is computers that are subsets of brain activities. We just use computers as a metaphor for brains because it’s easier to understand computers than brains. But it is the computers that were based upon old models of how brains worked as as our knowledge of brain function improves, so do computer functions. But brains remain on top
