It’s not weird. He doesn’t care either way. But he’s been told it’s something that people respond so and like a standard politician, makes that his focus. I don’t believe he cares either way about gender essentialism or whether people have trans hormones or surgeries. I truly believe that. But it’s got his base hopped up and as long as he can do things to keep it a repeated focus and people keep responding well to it, he’s free to do what he REALLY wants to do in the background that they won’t be looking at.
