It’s illegal for teachers in Florida to shame students based on race, although it’s up to parents to decide whether the teachers did the shaming. (anybody who’s a parent will do; it doesn’t have to be parents who are directedly affected in any way. They don’t even have to have school age children. Pastors with adult children usually are the one who sue the schools) This’ll soon be expanded to SB 1780 which would make it defamation to accuse someone of homophobia, transphobia, racism or sexism and punishable by fine I expect it to pass in Florida, then be challenged and thrown out later on in higher courts but meanwhile it passing, it’ll have effect for a time and sends the message. So this is a legislative version – with a particularly narrow focus – if one is to consider such words defamatory shaming words. Of course being forbidden from using such descriptors allows the behaviors the shaming words allude to do continue unabated. So the near future will be interesting here.
