The monomyth is a powerful one; yet it’s hard to say whether our experiences of life as mirroring the monomyth is BECAUSE that’s how life is, or because deeply embedded cultural scripts encourage us to think of our lives in those terms.
In any case, I don’t think the Jesus story is a myth because it resembles other stories, but the similarities show that it is a common way to frame the journey of someone we admire. It does not acknowledge nor does it negate the possibility of it being real or false. Correlation does not imply causation as it were.
Still interesting just the same. Joseph Campbell should be required reading everywhere imo, although I suppose simply watching Star Wars and getting the connections would be enough.
