Just-so stories don’t trouble me unless folks actually take them seriously.

=====

Biology: Around 8 yrs old, pulses of this:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gonadotropin-releasing_hormone
start spitting out of the hypothalamus.

It does the same thing in all humans, regardless of sex organs. Drip. Drip. Drip. Percolates through the body slowly. Tick. Tock. Tick Tock.

Usually takes years for any outward physical effects to show.

Meanwhile, preteen kids are all crazy. 8-12 is a nutty age.

Lots of socialization in that time frame and any DIFFERENCES you see between boys and girls’ behaviors in this time frame are SOCIALLY mediated.

=====

Aggressive, competitive behaviors in children from 8+ are the results of being in a prison-like environment for 7 hours a day, 5 days a week. Pressure cooker. Mass mental illness.

Homeschool and very small alternative school children do not have the excessive amounts of aggression and competitive behaviors of children schooled in prison-like environments.

Tons of studies on this stuff. That’s why there have been small-class-size initiatives in many public schools, to varying degrees of success. [still too crowded but better].

But we humans look at behaviors of socialized TEENAGERS and ADULTS who spent 12 years in these kinds of environments and call it “evolutionary psychology”.

But the truth is far more intimate and closer to home. You just have to look at your own childhood to confirm it.

======

Aspects? Sure. The whole thing? Far from.

=====

Toddler says “MINE”. Childhood fights. Great.

But what happens next? Genetics?

No. Parenting.

======

I can’t buy an argument that “Tattoo Parlors are territorial because of evolution”. Why?

a) Born.
b) Parented.
c) Schooled.

You learn language. Social behaviors. SO MANY urges are mitigated and downright FORGOTTEN by the time you get your tattoo parlor and put it in the wrong neighborhood.

Why the territories?

Gang socializing in schools due to pressure-cooker-like environments that are ANYTHING but natural and evolutionary.

======

I think I see folks mistaking media presentation for culture.

=====

There’s aspects of culture that are common, sure – and humans have more alike than not.

But what % of genes do all humans have in common?

====

What’s the genetic marker for capitalism? marxism? What about libertarianism?

====

Ok. Question: Why are you and I arguing right now?

=====

I fall into the “left libertarian” quandrant – which some have told me “doesn’t really exist” (as apparently I’m a communist?) – and I think I can attribute at least SOME of that to low levels of oxytocin genetically in me.

So I’ll give it that.

=====

High levels of oxytocin lead to bigotry and racism, along with male bonding such as sports and police forces and hugging.

=====

Biology doesn’t dictate that. Humans dictate that for biology.

Evolution has no goal.

=====

Species die out. Modify. Change. AFFORDANCES is key to the process but surviving is not a goal.

====

Might as well turn biology into a Greek God like the Fates

=====

Life goes on simply because it _can_.

 You’re anthropomorphizing this stuff man.
======
 Working with mathematical models of evolution and complexity, there’s nothing in there for survival but it still works.

 Random search:

” I argue that many fields that rely on a utility function for their predictive power may be able to do without it: free energy minimizers might not just be successful organisms or good reasoners, for example, but also good at running a business.”So his argument is that free energy minimizing is the key, not utility such as survival.
======
It also grows extensively social root systems which chemically communicate with other species.
====
 Cells have within them programs that say when to die. Cells which have survival as a ‘goal’ are cells that are called cancer cells.
=====
  Which behaviors are genetic norms and which are social?It’s not an either/or of course. But a majority-is-genetics is a map/territory argument with a lot of fiction. But a majority-is-social can ACTUALLY have good map/territory matches.
======
  You can COUNT how many kids does it take to torture a classmate before the kid cries in what’s called “normal behavior”.Map that to genes? Good luck.
=====
 It doesn’t make any sense to me. I’m trying and I almost always understand Brendan.
======
 are PROBABLY working from within the same framework on this.I don’t understand what it’s saying at all. I need further breaking down.
======
 Ok, if that’s what it is, that’s depressing and sad for anybody but the creators of evo-psych stories, who get all the narrative making fun.
=====
 Big gov fan? Huh. Well, it will. Too bad too as cigarette smoking is at historic lows among kids/teenagers/young adults. A success story about to be flipped around, to the delight of North Carolina, Kentucky and Virginia.
===
 I’ve been studying this stuff since I was a kid. Big Joseph Campbell fan once upon a time.Thing is, it’s got to be primarily cultural — that’s WHY we can lift up “from our biology”: it’s not our biology but our early cultural programming.
=====
 breathing? Biological but I can control it.
Whistling at a girl? Cultural.
Finding a particular kind of person attractive? Early fetishization but starting from genetic tendencies.
Some genetic stuff is “out of our (social) hands”. But most of it is malleable.
=====
 Biological program intersects with social programs intersects with free wiill intersects with bad weather, etc.
=====
 We simply DON’T have non-socialized humans to work with. Heavily discounting the power of socializing when we all SWIM in it seems like a fish that can’t recognize water.
=====
 Culture has knowledge of biology embedded in its systems and can play with it and does to change it. That’s culture’s power.
