It’s apparently more profitable and cheaper to pray rather than sitting down and discussing solutions. I don’t have the answer and I’m not going to try. But I know that prayers are for society’s powerless. Society’s powerful have more options than prayer. Society’s politicians have MANY more options than prayer, especially when you have access to free money. The people can pray. The legislators can legislate. Quit stuffing your pockets.

  “The solution” is that the people with the power should sit down and discuss rather than doing what the non-powerful do.

I have no problem with non-powerful people praying. I’m not religious but I know that sometimes that’s all you _can_ do.But the powerful CAN do something more.When they offer prayers only, it’s a slap in the face to every family member of the dead.

  Hey Canadian OP? This happened about 100 miles west of me – 1.5 hrs – in an affluent neighborhood in a VERY big high school with 3000+ students.He was the local weirdo nutjob who was obsessed with guns and knives.Did you know most people aren’t obsessed with guns and knives?There’s armed officers on most if not all Florida school campuses already.Tighter security? Sure. Arm everybody? No. Maybe Texas ’cause they’re weird. But not Florida.
===
  I’m saying: empty prayers when you have actual power is irresponsible.Prayers are for powerless. Powerful have options.
===
  I’m saying status quo keeps things as they are. Thoughts and prayers is status quo. Same old same old. And as it always has, it will always stay the same. 46 yrs old and it’s always been this and I don’t expect it to change.Enjoy your day.

  As a warning to other countries to MAINTAIN their gun laws though, it could be useful.“DON’T TURN INTO THE USA”.

  I watched a great Irish Mystery with my mom a few months back. Crucial to the story was the fact that this lady’s mysterious husband with the shady past that was killed, HAD A HANDGUN.Ooh, he had a HANDGUN! WHY did he have a HANDGUN?and as an US citizen I watched FASCINATED at what living in a place where owning a handgun could be so shocking and central to a story (10 parts I think).Totally different perspective than USA. I enjoyed it.

  (oh and he got murdered in Canada as part of a plot by a corrupt Canadian politician to introduce an Irish pharmaceutical drug that was dangerous to flood the Canadian medical system. So, it wasn’t too kind to Canada tbh but a good story)I’m from New Jersey and handguns were surprising to see growing up (Brady Bill).Now in Florida, I occasionally see handguns but it’s more likely someone has a hunting rifle safely strapped in their truck as handguns are a little tricky to get permits for.

  My brother shoots his rifle in the backyard here every night. I hear rifles being shot around me all of the time.But it’s the woods, rural-ish area.
===
It was similar in NJ. Guns were owned by: cops, gang members and Mafia groups and losers. [WANNA SEE MY GUUUUUUUNNN?]

  Affluent neighborhood, very large high school. Shooter grew up here. Victims grew up here. ALL in this small park-like very nice neighborhood with upper-middle class families.Guns aren’t cheap and he had a lot of them. What HAPPENED growing up for him here? I hope to find out for a change instead of the usual “mental illness” / “got bullied” trope.Life is way more complicated than pat answers.

  This white boy and his younger brother were adopted as babies. The adoptive father died when the future shooter was 9.The shooter had violent problems in middle school.He was a part of the JROTC at school.He joined a white nationalist group in Florida to turn Florida white, according to the guy that runs that group.He shows years of obsession with knives, guns and military.Meanwhile, the mom brought him faithfully to therapy all those years until she died in November 2017.

He and his younger brother moved in with a family friend.

Feb 14 2018, he does what he did.

You can give generic answers, Ben but do pay attention to each of the stories.

  He did the JROTC thing. His adoptive mom took him faithfully to therapy for years. He had hobbies – loved his knives and guns and stuff.But while I think a good nurturing environment can fix a lot of cracked eggs, some are gonna break regardless. But I agree with you 100% on the importance of self-esteem. Raised on Mr. Rogers, Bob Ross and stuff so it works.

  The US is in REALLY bad shape right now. It’s not crumbling, none of that… but we look disgusting to the rest of the planet and laughable. They just keep doing what they do, occasionally looking at us while eating popcorn.Biggest surprise lately is the number of Canadians I’ve come across who are like, “US school shootings don’t matter” and stuff like that.First time I was like WTF man. Got explained to me. “You guys just keep doing the same things over and over, letting the same things keep happening, and you do nothing. It’s boring and I’m tired of ‘another US school shooting. You’re clearly not going to get your shit together.”And damn, he was right. We’re not.

  You know, I could handle it when I KNEW it was a corporate plutocratic oligarchy but they’d throw some bones our way now and again.Now? It’s naked. I’d rather have it hidden behind nicities.Then again, this exposure might be the kick in the ass we need ’cause I KNOW nobody’s gonna want a repeat of this stuff.

===
  Everytime a non-US friend asks “why are you Americans so stupid”, I fumble my way through an excuse at first, then I’m forced to agree.It’s been humbling, I’ll tell ya.
—–
  “Why do you let them get away with it over and over again?”

  Florida schools are often pods. “Hallways” are outdoors.
Also, this is high school. Nobody’s dad or mom is going to abduct a high school kid due to a custody battle which is a more common (but less deadly) problem than high school stuff.
