It was very cool to find this out. I wondered if there was anything special about velvet that deafblind children who are “precommunicative” will actively (of their own volition) choose running their hand over velvet to indicate “more”, one of only 7 consistently mastered words across several deadblind schools in the USA among several dozen children out of a possible 55. So I think the periodicity of the velvet tactile response “lights up” in the supposedly precommunicative brain. I say supposedly because it’s not precommunicative, just really difficult which is why I’m fascinated by the little we’ve figured out so far.
