Oh, I think Erik has it. I was going only by what I saw. Research shows me:
 
“What I hear I forget,
what I see I remember,
what I do I understand.”
 
Which is a stepladder.
 
Don’t tell me for I’ll forget it.
If you show me, I’ll remember but
If I do it, I’ll understand it.
 
Understanding > remembering.
 
Or: Hands-on learning is best.
