What makes making realistic trees interesting is that they’re the “next stage” after you make Mandelbrots and such.
The distinction with trees over “pure fractals” is that they are both subsets of what is called https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L-system
These have “Turtle like” properties. That is you are controlling a drawing device that follows rules you set out. Algorithms.

Basically, Mandelbrot is an iterated function system that can be created within an L-System, but an L-System can create things with iterations would be more difficult to put in a logic or as a mathematical function because it uses string manipulation with iterations.
