Trump was a NY city boy. Liberal through and through. People who vote for him _wish_ he were more like an evangelical preacher but he’s not. But he gives people permission to be public jerks so they like that.
His great appeal is that he gives people permission to be their worst selves in public. No decorum. No thinking-of-the-other guy. Just jaded sarcasm dripping with every word. He makes it ok.
It’s not that you couldn’t before but “hey if THE PRESIDENT can do it, of course so can I and I like saying what I feel like – and if I have to sacrifice my ethics by supporting him to get to do that myself, well so be it…”
