aI’ll assume the sincerity of all parties involved in the case of the pastor vs the Sikh community.
The pastor questions “how can the peaceful distribution of materials be seen as ‘bullying’.
But the manner of distribution is not what people question but the contents of the flier.
He was offended by the parade passing his church. But the parade wasn’t condemning his church or religion nor were the people of the parade condemning his church or religion.
Does the pastor believe the existence of the Sikh community in proximity to his church a condemnation of his faith or church or religion?
He calls on the Pilgrims on the Mayflower. He says we have to intellectually honest and judge for Eternity. He quotes Jesus. But what do all of these things have in common?
What do the Pilgrims, Eternity (or God’s Judgement), Jesus, have in common? None of them can be interviewed by the newspaper. None of them could be called to a witness stand. What do they share in common with the act of distributing the flier and the contents of the flier? They’re all solely in control of one man, the pastor.
Contrast this to the Sikh’s point of view. They would not distribute flyers at a Christian parade because they don’t believe in converting others. They believe in the equality of all religions. The community outside of the Sikhs responded negatively towards the pastor’s actions. The Deli owner was upset the fliers were distributed from his parking lot and condemned the pastor’s actions. The El Sobrante Municipal Advisory Committee publicly condemned the action.
So were they all ganging up on him for his action that he is blameless for because he complimented their colorful clothing? Because he handed out papers? What harm can come from paper after all? And if the words on the paper suddenly matter and the contents ARE important, then is he covered by free speech? Is his duty to try to convert others supercede co-existence?
And this leads to a difficult question:
Is proselytization a violent act?
