In theory, additive synthesis could reproduce any musical instrument, along with other instrument necessities, but I grew up in an additive synthesis era (80s) and loved it, played around with it, created my own instruments, but the moment sampling came along, it blew adding fundamentals with harmonics together out of the water.
There’s also subtractive synthesis, which takes any random noise and can subtract harmonics to achieve something better than additive synthesis but not as good as sampled.
Sampling from what I know works differently than fourier series.
