In short, we only recognize as life stuff that reminds us of us in some particular ways.

Lines between life/non-life are blurry but there. I think we’ll have to conquer our anthropomorphic view of life first by FINALLY acknowledging that: yes we’re special for being humans but yes we’re limited because of the limitations of our species from being products of our evolutionary past tied to this particular planet at this point in the history of the Universe.

In short, we only recognize as life stuff that reminds us of us in some particular ways.

But it’s tricky territory: Lately, complexity has been becoming a possible candidate for life. I think that’s due to the brain-centric view we’ve been holding for a while – this obsession with number of neurons and connections. Not impossible of course and perhaps an upgrade in our view… but if we go that route, we’ll have to accept a lot of things as life that we currently don’t.

Plus, that’s still anthropomorphic.
