My ne (12.5) had a similar problem with Youtube, same reasons. He wanted to monetize his channel and couldn’t do it. He already set himself up with an adult account, set all of his videos to be monetized but then couldn’t start a Google Adsense.

Thankfully I have one, so I linked my account to his and I’ll give him the proceeds. But it shouldn’t be that way.

You should be allowed to have your own bank accounts and enter into basic financial agreements like these and get paid for your hard work.

Shame on Steam — and Playstation too. Glad XBox is at least a _little_ more reasonable but that might be because you’re not making money on XBox, just giving it to them.

Minors can back out of most contracts. Exceptions are “necessities” which unfortunately includes compulsory schooling. [so if you sign something at school and you’re a minor, you’re responsible for it. The whole set up is weird].

But other contracts you can get out of. Because of that, they get overly cautious. It’s ridiculous though because it’s more like a job: and you can get a job under 18 and pay taxes on it.

But instead, places like Steam and Playstation are thinking about stuff like this:

Since you’re 16, you *might* be able to sell a game on Steam. First you’d need to get a “teen checking account”. This, unfortunately requires a parent to go with you to set it up.

But once it’s set up, as long as there aren’t restrictions by the bank for receiving ETF (electronic funds transfer), you can setup a Steamworks developer account I think. I don’t see any other restrictions for age but they do need a bank account which is 18+ except for “teen accounts” which are 16+17.

It shouldn’t be this hard though. I think it’s criminal (to youth rights) that you can’t get a bank account on your own.

Outreach. Go where the people are. Example: One of the issues that matter to me for youth rights is education and self-determinism. Feeling inspired, I wrote a comment on a VSauce video (“Why Are We Morbidly Curious?), talking about the school system, the greater effectiveness of self-directed learning and complimenting VSauce for their role… and I got an amazing response that still continues.

Go where the people are. I don’t know what messages you’ll bring, but it’s how you’ll get eyes and ears.

Looks like it’s $100 for Steam Direct. You pay for each game you release but they only keep the money if you don’t make the $100 in sales.
