I’m going to try an experiment with my camera, spritecraft and minecraft to test a theory out, once it charges up again. I’m pretty sure it’ll work.

I’ve seen that yeah but to me, it’s overkill.  With a proper reference point for “THIS IS A [standard measure]” and telling the app that it’s a square room, the rules of perspective should take care of the rest.

I think the lasers and stuff is great for perfect, but if you want “good enough”, I can’t see why it’s not possible.  Six years ago, I played around with a thing a college kid made that uses your webcam to make a 3D point cloud of your face and it did a decent job, considering the limited resolution of webcams.

Somewhere in my files is … my face in 3D 😛

So I know it’s possible with just a camera and movement.  I’ve seen some that use a reference line for “this is ground”… and the initial rendering of a 3D obj might be taxing, but once you have it, then it’s useable anyplace.

I’m thinking next 5 years at most for the capability to be quick and simple.  I’m just hoping it comes sooner.  I’m going to try an experiment with my camera, spritecraft and minecraft to test a theory out, once it charges up again.  I’m pretty sure it’ll work.
