Being an outlier for various reasons, the bell curve model never sat well with me, even in school. Children can’t be averaged / neither can adults – neither can anybody. Tracking similarities and having overall standards isn’t inherently wicked, but the way they overapply it is dreadful to me. When I first learned about Common Core I was actually livid for a few weeks ’til I remembered that school is designed to suck and nothing can change that.
I’m glad homeschooling and magnet schools are available options. My mother had said that she would’ve homeschooled us if it was available, but at the time (late 70s/early 80s), it was only an option for religious reasons.
