I’m currently reading: Destiny Disrupted: A History of the World through Islamic Eyes. I have a decent knowledge of Byzantium and Western Europe and the Slavs, but not as much this perspective. It’s interesting so far: The author also wrote world history textbooks for the Texas Public School system. He’s from a middle eastern country but even when he lived there, he liked the western narrative of history better. It’s only after his brother became radicalized as an adult and after a tough assignment to compress Islamic history to a small corner of a world history book that he was inspired. Easy read: has a “middle America” tone to it. Lots of “gee shucks golly”. Wrote kids’ textbooks so no surprise.
Anyway, this neat map I found was from “just before Islam”.
