I’m aware and I’m glad for what it does for the USA. But food was and is global. Ignoring that because it ALSO provides jobs in the USA is missing important information. Do you know one of the most significant lessons I learned as a child was when I learned about global food production? The “seed to table” in various forms? At 11 years old, I’d sit at the table sometimes staring at my plate. I would imagine where each of the foods actually came from in the world. I imagined the factories producing them, both local and global. And for me, who wanted to be a good little Methodist but didn’t quite “believe” per se even then as I did not understand what “faith” and “belief” was supposed to be, I’d quietly say a little “thank you” in my head for all the people involved and grateful to be the recipient of such bounty. The thing is though, General Mills for example, just “happens to” run the factories in the USA. But they do not have to. What stops them from producing in a country with cheaper labor? There may be a financial reason – likely the us govt provides incentives for domestic production to prevent some of the leakage.
