I’m ancient and remember ——‘–,-‘—,-<@ and \\/\\/|2!7!|\\|9 |_!|<3 7|-|!5 but I *also* know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ and have had whole conversations in emojis. It’s just slightly abstract that’s all.

I’m 45. Online since 17. You can often tell someone’s ‘online era’ by the conventions they use. Emoticon, Emoji, Meme era, #360noscope or lit af fam, whether they still use kys / drink bleach etc.

oh now you’re mixing it up. misspells could be anywhere from 00s to now… but firin’ mae lazor is like 05-10-ish I’d say.

woah that’s AOL chat level… I’m impressed – and Kierstin – also impressed – you also remember dial up sounds

new kids discover infinity mirrors still tho’ – passing them on as chains on instagram and twitter… but I think it’s more random (I was on Vine and got a lot of followers… who follow me still… plus I got a nephew deep into meme culture so I get a peek into current stuff which is fun.

I met ONE GUY 3 weeks ago that had me beat. Online since 1983. I felt like I met an ancient god. Most folks from that era left online life long ago it seems.

Wait: 77? Oh come on.

==

full of shit. First BBS was around 77 I think. If you said mid 80s, MAYBE I’d believe you.

I’m skeptical of the 77 claim. I know my history but that’s too much lifted out of “history of online” text for me.

I’ll take you at your 89 word. Without surrounding context, you’ll have to forgive my skepticism of 77.

ok, now you’re moving into demigod territory. With 28 yrs online socially, I’ve done a fair share of spot the BS and you had the signs. It’s an era I’m proud of being a part of (ridiculously) and when folks have made claims, I test for viability. Your raft will float.

Similar era as me basically. I had a *little* heads up: Color Computer in 1983 at 11, first PC in 89 but I think the differences are small, esp since both our first languages were BASIC.

Everybody in this thread got to see a pre-Windows95 world, which was a VASTLY different place. I think today is better but I’m glad for those experiences.

I fell in love with socializing online right from the start. Had a CB radio before and during at the beginning and loved meeting random people around town, all different. But having far off “pen pals” from everywhere suited me and I never left. I’m a computer nerd – did my share of tinkering but it was the fascinating people online that I liked best. Still do. I don’t like getting “too deep” but I enjoy “deep shallow” public chat if that makes any sense.

Yeah I skipped the blogging era. FB’s format is chat-room + forum-like and I also like how most places online (like social apps on phones) have active comment sections. it’s a lot like chat rooms and forums.

I hate admitting that I like fb and yet here I am.

It’s gotten SUPER toxic over the past few years. Lots of angry people. The trolls I expect, occasional malcontent is ok. But people working in teams on agendas is something I didn’t expect.

I’m watching my nephew starting to do it a little, going on “raids” against online daters in his ROBLOX. It is what it is I suppose but I try to keep him from being too toxic and he’s basically a good kid. Still, I pay attention.

I’ve only been on this group for a few hours and it seems like a mostly decent group compared to some of the places I’d been lately. I’m liking it.
