…they didn’t have anything special. They were merely behind.

“But after a week of sobering data, Lofven now seems to be striking a darker tone. In an interview published on Saturday by Dagens Nyheter, he warned that Sweden may be facing “thousands” of coronavirus deaths, and said the crisis is likely to drag on for months rather than weeks.”

Japan has been very slow to respond decisively, preferring to keep businesses open. Their response strikes me as very similar to Sweden’s, where they gave some recommendations but have been slow to be decisive.

Which is the best foot forward? Nations are moving towards issuing stay-at-home orders and away from herd immunity ideas.
—-
We don’t know if those who survive get immunity or are weakened in other ways. Being lax we may end up with weaker rather than stronger traits.

t Logan’s Run was trending on Twitter a few weeks ago. It was brought up when some politicians were suggesting that people over a certain age should be wiling to sacrifice themselves in order to keep the economy going. But what you’re referring to is opposite, banking on younger people without conditions to survive and thrive and carry on.The problem I have with the idea is that we don’t know if young people will develop immunity. It is also possible they will infect and reinfect each other, growing weaker and not stronger each time.

They’re testing for antibodies. The coronavirus is a shape that transfers foreign RNA into us. This one is a particular shape and contains RNA from the bat mutated to be only slightly compatible with humans but mostly incompatible with humans. It incubates for a long long time – up to 14 days – prior to symptoms showing, if at all. Will the body develop a block to prevent the “key” entering our “lock”?This particular virus has been mutating slowly, so it’s _possible_ we will develop antibodies that work. The makers of vaccines are counting on the ability to produce artificial antibodies. Will either strategy work? I don’t know.
—-h, I’m not afraid. I already am a hand-washer and don’t do crowds. So for me, this is barely a change at all from my normal behavior.

I like that this exposes the fragility of capitalism and the inability of big companies to manage even a few weeks off, particularly after citizens and families have been lectured for YEARS about having 3-6 months savings. The businesses, which in the USA are considered “persons” with rights, didn’t do that for themselves and get bailouts from the government that citizens have to pay for — AND we citizens have to beg to get ANYTHING ourselves while we deal with this.

I don’t know. But with automation the only logical future, unless you plan on killing off massive amounts of people, folks have to eat and have a place to live and something to do and there will be a lot of people. Tying everything up to ‘job’ might not be viable

There are resources on this planet and I think the planet will support 11 billion easily enough _if_ we get smart about how we use and reuse things.Reintroducing dinosaur-era junk back into the atmosphere with the oil and such helped power us for 150 years but leaving what’s left down there and powering things in other ways makes sense.etc etc.

I read that book in the 80s. I was hooked on his stuff as a teenager. It was a Russian virus made in a lab. Nothing like COVID-19 though.
—-
I “upgraded” to Koontz after Stephen King. It was a common 80s pattern. Abandoned horror after that for the most part, got boring.
—-
There was lots of virus stories in the 70s and 80s. Invisible things that infect you, usually created by evil governments or mad scientists or came from aliens or my favorite; drilling in the South Pole. Resurrecting old virii from dinosaur era. That was cool.
—-
It would be nice if somebody was in charge enough to orchestrate anything even close to that level. The amount of competence required would be surprising to witness.
—-
I’m watching infections rates rise significantly where I live (Florida, USA) because our government was lax like Sweden.Similar measures were put in: closing schools, some social distances guidelines, as Sweden but little else. Now we’re getting more and more cases daily.

If I choose to not pee in a swimming pool but my neighbor decides to pee in the same swimming pool, how do I stop the spread of their pee into my area?
—-
All I know is: the peak in my state is expected to be May 2nd, which is a LONG time away.It would have been weeks sooner with lower predicted death numbers had stronger measures been taken sooner but my governor is wimpy and afraid to offend businesses. But now we’ll probably get the big death and big sick numbers and it will drag on for weeks with effects to the economy that will last for months. He didn’t want to prevent kids from going to Spring Break at our beaches so they could spend money here. They were here. They spent money here. They got sick here and brought it back and infected others here.

The stupidity was being lazy about a serious viral infection that spreads easily.

Governing should be an activity where the people themselves in government are responsible for their actions, which is governing.
—–
Governors regulate. They guide the activities of people and businesses in their state. That’s what governing is.
—-
IF the government in power is enforcing restrictions and the people voted that government in…
..then the voice of the people is being heard.
—–
‘ It will never be the voice of all the people. That part is annoying, I agree.

I’m trying to figure out how it differs from the USA in that way.I’m REALLY trying to figure out the comparison on a see-saw. China on one side, USA on the other. So far it’s balancing out.
—–
OK. Religion. Religion. Religion is an area where China and the USA is very different.
====
Yes, much like Russia, they don’t like religions outside of a few favorites. and will make them ‘disappear’ if they show up. [don’t be a Jehovah’s Witness in Russia].Ok. Yes, > 1% at least for religion.

China’s horrible about forcing their 99 year contracts at all cost. I think China should abandon Hong Kong and let it be and form a trading partnership instead.I already thought I covered Hong Kong before. Yes, human rights violations and yes awful. Contract had to be fulfilled. Law and order gone too far.As far as the muslim concentration camps, I don’t know anything about those. I’d need to research that. I wouldn’t be shocked but I thought China allowed Islam to be practiced.
—-
That’s why I said I can’t shift the balance beam where China is worse in that dept because the US makes people go away in various ways all the time.
====
Put it this way: I laugh everytime a meme comes up and says “it was Hilary”. It’s silly putting it all one one person. But do organizations besides the Mafia act like the Mafia?
Of course.
—-
I know more than one tale of a bully “disappearing” from a town suddenly and nobody knowing who got rid of them.
Same idea.
—-
My point is: Is it possible they made that scientist disappear? Sure it’s possible. Do I think China’s more likely to do that than the USA or Putin or the UK? No.
—-
Sorry. I did read up on Muslims in China though. I didn’t know about the reeducation camps in 2018. So, they suck on the religion thing. Really super suck on it. Who does reeducation camps anymore? It’s not like they’re gay and need conversions.
—-
It was interesting. I didn’t know about it. My head’s usually in math/science stuff, not what other countries are doing.

If it makes you feel better, I think Saudi Arabia oversteps its bounds in the human rights dept and really needs to work on things some more – and China should stop shooting at the Hong Kong college kids. But ultimately I’m a believer in “fix your home” first. Our own human rights abuses bother me more than our neighbors. We got years worth of problems to fix.

 +34,196 new cases yesterday
+1,331 new deaths yesterday.
