I’ve learned a rule through experience, “If I find myself excessively agreeing with a position, be harsh and discover everything that’s wrong with it. Continue until you can entirely understand and agree with the opponents positions without saying, “Yeah, but..”.
Once you can agree dispassionately with the oppositions, and even argue their points against the position you favor with equal fervor, then you can sort out the goods/bads of each with less bias]
So that’s my rule of thumb. I don’t know what it’s called but it’s very helpful.
[I had a Malcolm Gladwell infatuation a few years ago – some critical analysis later though and I got a strong reminder of the nature of popular media, how it can carry one along and get you to forget certain things you used to know… I was sad but it was a necessary cut].
