I’d say that a parable is better at conveying certain meanings such as life lessons but for conveying the sacred I think allegories may do a better job as they are more abstract and “high meaning’ . For example, the journey or path allegory, common to a number of world religions is so powerful at convey the sacred that it can be abstracted from the religions and considered a sacred mythology – even a meta myth or monomyth; Joseph Campbell’s Sacred Journey is such a path.
