I was never deeply into that aspect of Christianity, more focused on Gospel, Psalms, book of Job, “how to be Christ-like”. Never got much into Paul’s letters nor Revelations but I was somewhat familiar.
WIkipedia’s breakdown of the standard end-times Historicist categories seems familiar.
Usually it’s ascribed to the Roman Catholic Church (“Papcy”) from the Protestant reformation onwards, although in the 19th-21st century, these have gained other meanings.
Israel coming onto the scene in 1948 fed a lot of new American interpretations of Revelations, I think starting in the 1970s and growing since then, with themes of “New World Order” (starting with Nixon’s.. ummm. oh was it “Trilateral Commission”?), leaving the gold standard for currency, and such, and less focus on the Pope and more on theories of some global elite notion.
Somewhere along the line, it got wrapped into American binary politics too in ways that still baffle me.
