I was aware of the book and I _did_ like one of the songs from Steppenwolf… but… …the real reason? …I got on the CB Radio from my home – I got into it at the tail end of the CB radio era when I was 15 or so – and I had my little antenna and my 12V battery converter… ..and I wanted to join in the people talking to other people. But you need a handle. Names I heard: White wolf. Red wolf. Dark Wolf. Black wolf. Light Wolf. Blue wolf… … …so many “wolf”s…. .. so I had no idea what to pick, so I liked “born to be wild” and someone gave me the book by Herman Hesse to read (I never did – kept meaning to) so I thought, “well, 3’s the charm. I’ll be “Steppenwolf”. So when chat rooms came up a year or two later, I just used the same name.
