I wanted to hate him because I IMMEDIATELY recognized a whiny version of myself (or: “me as seen by others”) but I couldn’t for that same reason.

Oddly though, I was fine with Wesley (but not their innane treatment of him) even though I recognized ‘ awkward boy wonder’ from myself. The Wesley moments I couldn’t stand I blame on scripting errors.

It’s just, they had ONE BOY on this whole ship and all they do is yell at him. No wonder he was neurotic.

I loved two Barclay episodes for the same reason: “Nobody believed me because I’m a misfit but I showed them” – yet he kept that Jimmy Swaggart (“It’s a wonderful life”) innocence without gloating.
