I used to write essays in school like this. I’d never directly answer the question but go on a long side track that was interesting. worked on most teachers.

So, you believe the ends justifies the means more than character. Why else this elaborate peacock dance?

===

Usually ends justify means applies to the clearly powerful and not to the poor, who usually get a free pass in most societies anyway, but at least it addresses the question.

====

I don’t know political jargon much. Not my field. But common usage of the phrase doesn’t typically apply to the weak. You don’t hear of a Machivillian widow or orphan.

=====

It’s a tricky area for someone as myself, for I lean in the pragmatics / utilitarian side often, willing to excuse bad acts for greater goals.

Yet, not entirely for in the midst of the pragmatics, there has to be a “good core”. But do the acts taint the character or can a good character get through bad acts unsullied for his/her “good justifications”?

====

Much of US politics relies on “good character”. With good character (reputation, “clout”), you have been given power to commit atrocities so long as you give a good reason or go about it the right way. But so much of that is gossip based.

With Utilitarian/pragmatism, anything can be justified. It’s dangerous, full of landmines. It can lack grounding.

=====

Like many, I believe I’m basically a “good person”. But what does that mean? Am I really? What bearing do the opinions of others have on that?

Why do I act? Best interest of self? Other? Greater good?

====

If you do the wrong thing for the right reasons, aren’t you simply doing the wrong thing?

=====

If the species were not threatened with survival a given, what would change in your stance?

=====

Let’s go the technology route: non-contradictory laws established, people are still people but a smoothly operating system is in place that maximizes the well-being of all automatically, without any need for manual intervention.

In short, the broken systems are all fixed and work well.

What is life like in that society?

=====

Of course but there’s a place for them in that society too.

====

So is there no point you can see where you could put the sword down for peace?

What makes your question tricky s “philosopher” *is* a Western Civ thing. To find non-western philosophers, you may have to delve into religions, which is often where you’ll find a great majority of philosophizing or in law.

12 yr old boys + 27 yr old men who grew up on 4chan go to 4chan. Then the 12 yr olds grow out of that phase.

Seriously though I do. I WANTED a modem since my first computer and even b4 War Games, but had to wait ’til 89.

====

meme war though, I mean there WAS another one about two years ago, but I haven’t seen once since. Mid-2016 is the last I saw of it. Once “Alt Right” became a household word instead of a Richard Spencer wet dream, it was done.

=====

I got on in 89 and haven’t left. 90s spend downloading msgs to reply offline on BBS’, Usenet, wherever, upload later… brought diskettes to work just to sneak in replies. I wanted the world online. So happy now, even with the chaos.

====

Edge is gone though. Political memes now are for irony and mocking more than serious. Just look at Nazbol memes: Do you REALLY think there’s any (or that many) actual Nazbols around? It’s just a mockery.

=====

Nathan Larson or that Santa Fe shooter are probably some of the last unironic Nazbols you’ll see. Up and coming generation adopted the humor but not the seriousness of the edgy millennials that came before.

====

Just tell them they’re using dead memes and repeat. They are, it’s old, and if they’re anybody behind Layer 1, you might get a good conversation.

====

They’re big on me_irl again past few months. Folks are rolling their eyes at them at this point but it was a good salve after do you kno da wae had its run.

====

I have a 13 yr old nephew and I have to stay ahead of on memes. I’ve reached transparency.

====

Pepe’s function has returned to pre-political status. Had its run.

You’re reliving past glories.

====

It doesn’t return in the same form though. If it does, it’s just the old memers.

=====

Of course. But it’s a raw wound on the youngins right now. It took a year for despacito memes to start after the collective screaming but once they did, there’s no stopping them.

====

Despacito is basically a roblox meme in any case.

====

only thing I learned about memes (at least for me), don’t fall too in love with any of them.

====

No but I was never that way. I was always tall and muscular, so I’d stand in front of bullies and take the hits or break it up while the little one could run off.
