“I think youre cool, its just like, youre an old school nerd.”

I’m a total old school nerd. I’m 44 and I like observing shifting cultural patterns over time. I jump in, participate, poking the bears at times to see what happens, then step out again and look at another subculture. Sort of an internet cultural anthropologist for fun.
How old are you dude? I dont csre, I think youre cool, its just like, youre an old school nerd.

I’m especially like that with music. I haven’t gotten ‘into a band’ since I was 14 and went through a Pink Floyd obsession. That point on, I’d listen to everything and form opinions. [and try to play metal on the piano or a borrowed guitar]. I skipped over Nirvana period + Wheezerland, jumped back in during Gangsta rap and mid 90s club, ignored most of Screamo + then ICP ’til afterwards, and got interested again with Dubstep, EDM, pop culture music from 13-15, and I’ve been filling in my gaps of metal knowledge here and there whenever ppl would share their favorites.

My take on music: if somebody likes it, there’s a reason and musical taste can sometimes say a lot about someone (sometimes not – it’s not a guaranteed indicator of personality unless someone happens to also follow cultural stereotypes, which not everybody does).

I read music like I speed-read a book or website. I jump through a song, looking for the musical theme and get a ‘feel’ for its character. I usually analyze a song in about 10-20 seconds on youtube. I don’t usually bother with the lyrics, just the music but if somebody I’m talking to is into the lyrics, then I give them a quick read too and treat it like a poem.

I have yet yet to find a piece of music that i can’t find something interesting about, although I have some biases. Technical skill always impresses me, especially when a band is great at being just a little out of phase or just a little off key but on purpose.

It takes precision to be “just a little off” the right way, which allows for something new to emerge in the spaces inbetween.

I like how spoken word back-of-the-throat growly (I’m no good at genre *or* band names), while it’s gotten kind of ‘old sounding’ to my ears (it’s been around since the late 90s that I’ve heard), nevertheless I can appreciate the expression of rawness and that instead of singing, it’s got a pattern, similar to spoken word rap pattern, where it starts with a loose “note” that it keeps returning to, goes up and down but always returns to it.

What’s nice about the growly voice is it usually mirrors the drums, giving it an extra boost of power for the listener, reminiscent of pummeling somebody with a blunt object with each blow., whereas when rap does it, it has more of a stoner “stability” to it, like, “yeah,I’m sitting here and talking but I’m not moving much, except my arms, which seems to thrust out from me in a v-shape from time to time when I want to make a point.”
