I think a measure of suitability without being tied to pragmatism could be a good comparison metric that’s baked in. i’m just brainstorming here but when I’m hit with multiple solutions or new similar ideas, there’s a number of factors that eliminate the bulk. One of the things that makes a few rise up to the top quickly is suitability. so for example it could be consistent with itself, or consistent with others, or it can be interesting by being a contrast to others, or it can seem very pragmatic and doable, or it can match an aesthetic – likely many other factors too. That might be where the contradictions come in : they’re not a concern at first. rather, the initial focus is effectiveness but without specifying purpose yet.
