I struggle with this because it’s similar to my thinking but different enough that it’s difficult. It’s easy when things are radically different but hard when they’re “just different enough”; a distinction that makes a difference. For example: I’ve often said that if we were capable of experiencing reality as it is, we would be overwhelmed in our current state; evolution did us a favor by simplifying things and making the universe accessible for our needs as a species. Now, that sounds similar to the bit I know of Donald Hoffman. Similar but different. Do objects have outlines in reality? Humans and lower animals are perfectly capable of interpreting line drawings as substitutions for real world objects. But do those objects really have outlines or is that a trick that our systems use to help us experience reality in the speeds necessary while respecting our limited cognition? It’s a “trick”. So does that amount to an illusion? That’s where I have trouble. I can’t call it an illusion because it _does_ correspond to something.
